Application process for Music Production Intern at TikTok

Online application

For the initial stage, you are required to submit a CV and answer particular questions about your previous experience in music alongside any other extracurricular activities that you take part in in your daily living. In the application, you are also required to submit a portfolio of your previous work.

How to respond for success

‍My CV was not so much tailored to the company. It was more a focus on all the musical and academic activities that I have been involved in. I believe my CV stood out due to the breadth of experience I was able to demonstrate through my musical accolades.

Expect a month or so wait before progressing to the next stage.

Video Interview

This stage was split into 2 parts. The first was a pre-recorded video interview, followed by some technical questions. Within the video interview, some questions required you to analyse different music critically and then answer questions on that music. Questions were tailored in a way that allowed you to fully explore a wide range of creative thoughts one might have about a piece. The technical interview section was not too long - around 30 minutes. My preparation only consisted of going over some technical musical key terms however preparation for these questions has purely been a long process from the beginning of getting into music.

Example task

‍You could be asked to listen to contrasting pieces of music and then answer on what the specific contrasting elements of the music were.

How to respond for success

‍Clarity is key! I believe the key to successful answers was making sure that I was able to accurately use appropriate technical terminology to explain my thoughts on pieces of music that were presented to me. As well as this, the clarity of your answer is important. It is better to be accurate and concise than very wordy but not specific. Quality > Quality in other words!

Expect a few days wait before progressing to the next stage.

Final Interview

This final interview was no longer than 45 minutes and was rather informal in the dress code. There was no need to wear a full suit and tie. This interview felt like a 'getting to know you' interview. Questions mainly focused on personal character and recalling incidents where you have had to deal with adversity and how you overcame that scenario. It's important to just express yourself as you are and be very transparent with the interviewer on how you operate in different working environments.

Example task

‍You may be asked something generic and situational like "Give me a scenario where you had to manage a team and how did you go about it?". Alternatively, the questions could be more personal like "Do you work better in a team or individually?"

How to respond for success

‍Technical preparation was again minimal as you cannot change your character overnight. You really cannot 'blag' your way through this kind of thing. Know your CV well, and run through some examples of when you demonstrated key characteristics (Leadership, teamwork, overcoming adversity etc etc).

Expect a few weeks wait before being offered a position.
