Online Application
The initial stage of Jack’s application process was very simple. Jack was required to send his CV, cover letter, and a completed application form to the recruitment team.Expect a 1-2 week wait before progressing to the next stage.
How to respond for success
Given that Lloyds Banking Group (LBG) does not ask motivational questions in the preliminary stage of the application process, the cover letter is the first opportunity to convey your personality / characteristics to LBG. In writing his cover letter, Jack demonstrated solid interest in the company by describing what he knew about LBG’s line of business, significant business awards and achievements, and ethical objectives, and describing how these align with his own qualifications, achievements, and personal values.
Assessment Centre
This stage took Jack two hours, and took the form of a virtual meeting with three main stages: a 10-15 minute presentation, a case study and an interview.
Presentation
In the invitation to the assessment centre, Jack was prompted to prepare a 10-15 minute presentation on the impact of coronavirus on the banking industry. Jack used powerpoint for this, and prepared a loose script that he rehearsed the previous night so as not to read directly off the slides or sound robotic whilst presenting. Jack made sure to demonstrate his analytical skills in this stage by collecting and visualising data in the presentation rather than just providing generalised insights.
Case Study
The case study requires a basic understanding of business and mathematics, and cannot be prepared for per se. One question asked Jack to rank four customers, each of different ages, incomes, credit histories, and professions by highest to lowest credit risk. Another required Jack to determine the cost-effectiveness of three different promotion methods e.g, leaflets, mobile adverts and SMS marketing given their respective cost, outreach, and take-up rates. Jack made sure to demonstrate his analytical skills in this stage by thinking out loud and explaining to the interviewers how he was using the information provided to arrive at his answers.
Interview
The final stage of the assessment centre is an interview, where LBG asks a range of motivational, competency, and situation based questions. Jack was asked to describe times he has demonstrated initiative, and interpersonal skills. At the end of the interview, he was asked how he would continue his learning outside of the internship if his application was successful.
How to respond for success
Ensure to dress appropriately. Jack wore a full suit and tie. Do not be too nervous, the interviewers made Jack feel very welcomed and the atmosphere was calm, remember to smile and be friendly towards your interviewers. The interview was online due to the coronavirus pandemic. Be sure to Establish a quiet place where you can be sure you will be free from distraction or background noise. Have a pen, paper, and a calculator to hand - these are useful in the case study.
Jack received his offer five days after the interview.
